We rediscovered Austria about two years ago, after a gap of around twenty years. We were under the false impression that Austria was very expensive very formal and staid.
After the twenty year gap we found that we were entirely wrong, that Austria was much cheaper to holiday in than many other European countries that we had previously visited. We found the people we met were refreshingly informal, very helpful and very trusting.
We enjoyed the skiing in Kaprun and the fact that with the glacier it meant that the sking was reliable. We loved the lake in Zell am See and the summer activities that it offered. We continue to be impressed with the modern Austrian infrastructure with its road, rail or ski lift networks. We found that the mix of mountains, lakes, cities, sports, history and culture suited us all as a family - the scenery was an extra bonus.
We also found that Austria was a great place to relax and recuperate. We are still beginning to grasp the Austrian concept of 'wellness' and the enjoyment of spas, but we do understand the concept of the local beers and other Austrian cuisine!
We have still to grasp more of the basics of the German language, but where ever we go in Austria we are made to feel very welcome and at home, indeed many people understand and speak English.
We would encourage you to discover or rediscover Austria for yourselves.
